Jokic Shines, Lakers Lead After First Quarter
In the fourth game of the NBA 2023-24 season playoffs first round between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Denver Nuggets, held at the Crypto.com Arena, the Lakers finally withstood the Nuggets’ chase, succeeding with a 119-108 victory, narrowing the series to 1-3.
Nikola Jokic of the Nuggets continued to demonstrate his basketball prowess, excelling in scoring, rebounding, and assists. Meanwhile, the Lakers’ starting lineup all contributed points early in the game. As the first quarter progressed, both teams made numerous mistakes but failed to capitalize on them, with the Lakers leading 28-23.
Lakers Maintain Lead in Second Quarter
In the second quarter, LeBron James attempted multiple strong drives to the paint, while Jamal Murray continuously attacked to disrupt the Lakers’ defense. However, the margin between the two teams remained at around five points. After adjustments to their lineups, Austin Reaves emerged as a significant contributor for the Lakers, helping them extend their lead to 61-48 by halftime.
Lakers Expand Lead in Second Half
In the second half, Rui Hachimura displayed aggression in scoring for the Lakers, while Michael Porter Jr. responded for the Nuggets with shots from mid-range and beyond. However, the Nuggets struggled with their shooting efficiency, while the Lakers’ stars exerted their influence inside the paint, extending the lead to 15 points and forcing the Nuggets to call a timeout.
Nuggets Attempt Comeback in Fourth Quarter
Despite efforts from Jokic and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to reduce the deficit, the Lakers maintained their lead. In the final minutes, Jokic’s strong drives and KCP’s three-pointers injected some suspense into the game, but LeBron James and D’Angelo Russell’s contributions ensured the Lakers stayed in control.
Lakers Secure Victory in Closing Moments
With a 9-point lead and possession, the Lakers effectively managed the clock, securing their win. Despite the Nuggets’ attempts to foul Austin Reaves and freeze time, his successful free throws extended the Lakers’ lead to double digits. The Nuggets struggled to score in the remaining time, allowing the Lakers to finally break their losing streak against them.
